General information about Islas Canarias

The Canary Islands (in Spanish: Las Islas Canarias) are an Spanish Atlantic territory in the south-west of Spain and the north-west of Africa near Morocco, Cap Verde and the archipelagos of Azore Islands and Madeira Islands, both belonging to Portugal. Because of their geographical location, the Canary Islands have always been an important station for the navigation between Europe, Asia and America.

The autonomous community of the Canary Islands is divided into two provinces, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The capitals of these provinces, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are co-capitals of the autonomous community.

The Canary Islands consist of seven islands: Gran Canaria (capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Tenerife (capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Lanzarote (capital Arrecife), La Palma (capital Santa Cruz de La Palma), La Gomera (San Sebastián de La Gomera), El Hierro (capital Valverde) and Fuerteventura (capital Puerto del Rosario).

The Canary Islands have a population of 1.8 million inhabitants on an total area of 7500 sq km, that makes a density of population of 247.58 inhabitants per sq km. Ethnically the population is a mix of Spanish, Berber and Portuguese people with a steadily increasing number of African and Eastern European immigrants.

The Canary Islands have a very pleasant climate. Due to their geographical location, near to the equator and very close to Africa, there is subtropical climate with eternal springtime. The average daily temperatures alternate between 20°C and 29°C that provides ideal bathing conditions throughout the whole year. Water temperatures vary from 22°C during the summer to 19°C in winter. The surprising landscape with the fact that you can see mountains covered by snow while you are lying on the beach catching some sun makes the Canary Islands even more interesting.

In La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria there sometimes tropical rains but in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote it is very dry and you have guaranteed sunshine almost the whole year.
